Over the past few weeks, I have done thorough research about the The RealReal to help you make an informed decision. I can tell you everything you need to know before you buy.
At the end of this review, I will also tell you the best alternative of The RealReal so that you can enjoy the same benefit at a lower cost.
In this The RealReal review, I’ll cover the following topics to assist you in making an informed decision:
What is The RealReal?
Consignment luxury goods are authenticated and sold through The RealReal.
A startup that Julie Wainwright launched out of her kitchen table is now one of the top resellers of pre-owned high-end merchandise.
Although they are best known for their designer clothing and accessories, they also sell things like furniture and even artwork.
But should you put your trust in a website like The Real Real with your hard-earned cash?
The RealReal Reviews
While The RealReal’s commitment to authenticity is commendable in theory, what have other shoppers’ experiences been like?
Good comments may be found about The RealReal throughout the board. The BBB has awarded them an A+ rating, while TrustPilot and SiteJabber users have given them an average of 4 and 4.5 stars respectively.
In addition to the rare reports of counterfeit goods, there were reports of problems reaching the customer support team or receiving adequate assistance while doing so.
Selling With The RealReal Review
You should learn more about their consignment rates if you’re interested in selling products through their high-end marketplace.
What percentage of the asking price do they actually offer? Your annual net sales and the items you sell will determine your profit.
Your earnings from consigning with them will increase proportionally to the amount you send their way. You may see their different membership tiers below:
- Insider ($0 – $1500 sold annually) – 55% commission

Top Brands + Designers
You can pretty much pick any designer label under the sun and find it at The RealReal. Designers including Isabel Marant, Derek Lam, Vivienne Westwood, Prada, and Chanel were all represented in the new arrivals section. Their wares range from handbags and jewelry to watches and even furniture.
Even if you can’t find a Dior from the 1950s or a Yves Saint Laurent from the 1970s, there are likely many other stunning vintage pieces by these and other designers just waiting to be discovered.
Those who miss the styles of the 1990s and 2000s will feel right at home on RealReal. Many stores sell Louis Vuitton handbags, blazers, and skirt suits for hundreds or thousands of dollars less than their estimated retail value.
There will also be plenty of familiar items from 2011 and later, both from established historical houses and up-and-coming labels. Numerous pieces by contemporary designers Rag & Bone, Alice + Olivia, and Reformation are featured.
You won’t find any Forever21 products here because of the store’s emphasis on designer and luxury labels. Discover the full roster of available labels right here!
One of the worst things that can happen while shopping for vintage or pre-owned items is to end up with a fake Birkin. How does The RealReal guarantee that their items are authentic?
Fortunately, they place a high value on being genuine. All of their products, from bags to electronics, are checked by a team of specialists to guarantee their authenticity.
Just how do they verify your identity? Products for sale are classified as either “high risk” or “low risk.”
Authentication of high-stakes objects (such popular streetwear or rare vintage items) is often outsourced to bona fide experts in their field.
The RealReal claims that many of these specialists come straight from the manufacturers themselves and have been educated to spot knockoffs of certain lines.
Authenticators who have been educated to access objects in a certain category or from a particular brand, but who aren’t necessarily true specialists or masters in the field, are offered low-risk things like modest pieces from newer brands with clear authenticity markings.
They are advised to seek the assistance of high-risk authenticators if they have any doubts regarding an item’s authenticity. Master authenticators of high-risk products have my full confidence, but I have my doubts about the low-risk team.
The authentication page claims that all new hires go through at least 40 hours of training, and that current employees regularly attend training to stay abreast of emerging counterfeiting techniques. Misclassifying an item as low risk increases the likelihood that it will be overlooked.
Benefits of The RealReal
1. Product Quality is acceptable
The RealReal’s product quality is satisfactory. It’s well-designed and serves its purpose well. Some customers may, however, receive defective products from them. As a result, I would recommend that The RealReal inspect the products before shipping them to customers. Customers are less likely to receive subpar or defective products as a result of this.
2. Customer Service is Available
Shopping in stores that provide poor customer service is extremely inconvenient. As a result, it’s critical to shop at stores that at the very least provide a phone number and an email address for after-sales service.
The RealReal’s customer service is adequate but not exceptional. You may contact them if you have any questions or concerns about your order, but it may take more than 48 hours to receive a response. This is not ideal, especially in some emergency situations.
3. The RealReal meets the product description
Many stores use exaggerated marketing tactics in their advertisements to increase sales. This does not always imply that the product is a scam.
The RealReal’s advertisements are quite impressive and can catch the attention of customers. Some may believe they are overhyped. However, you cannot conclude that it is a scam because The RealReal does, to some extent, deliver on its promises.
4. Door-to-door Delivery
Many people prefer to shop online because it saves them time. Simply place an order and wait for the product to arrive. You are not required to drive to a physical store to obtain the product.
The RealReal is an online retailer that offers door-to-door delivery. Even if you live in a remote location, you can still purchase from The RealReal.
5. Easy to Place an Order
The RealReal’s website design is appealing. It is very simple for people to place an order. Simply click the “add to cart” button and proceed to the payment page with your credit card. Unlike a physical store, The RealReal’s website accepts orders 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The RealReal Cons and Complaints
1. The RealReal is Overpriced
The RealReal is not inexpensive. Many people complain that it is too expensive. Because the quality of The RealReal is not superior to that of other similar products, the higher price is not justified.
You will be able to find a similar or identical product at a lower cost elsewhere. Let me tell you where at the end of this The RealReal review.
2. Inefficient logistics
The RealReal is a small company with insufficient capital to invest in logistics. They are forced to rely on inefficient third-party logistics. They have minimal control over the shipping speed.
Therefore, you may see a lot of customer complaints about their slow delivery. If you want fast shipping, go with a large marketplace like Amazon. Unlike The RealReal, Amazon can ship products in a matter of days.
3. The RealReal Has Few Positive Reviews
I looked for positive The RealReal reviews but came up empty-handed. While the product is excellent, customers may be dissatisfied with their service.
Because The RealReal is a small company, you should not expect them to provide world-class service. It is preferable to purchase from a large marketplace such as Amazon if you want to ensure good after-sales service. There is much better customer protection there.
4. The RealReal does not offer unconditional refunds
The RealReal does not always issue refunds to customers. Although there is a refund policy, The RealReal has complete discretion over whether or not to issue refunds.
Some customers may find it unjust. However, this is a disadvantage when purchasing from an independent online store. Personally, I prefer purchasing from marketplaces such as Amazon, where the refund policy is reasonable. When requesting a refund, you will have Amazon’s backup.
5. Difficult to Return the Product
If you don’t like The RealReal, it’s difficult to return it to them. You would be responsible for the shipping costs.
That is why I dislike shopping at independent stores. If you want to avoid this problem, I recommend purchasing from Amazon. If you don’t like the product, you can easily return it. Later, I’ll tell you where you can get a similar or identical product to The RealReal on Amazon.
6. Some Good Reviews are Written by The RealReal’s Affiliates
You probably have found some other reviews of The RealReal and all of them are saying good words.
But some of them are actually paid to write, meaning they are sponsored posts. Therefore, their words are often biased and not trustworthy. Those reviews are simply sales pages and do not tell you the downsides of The RealReal.
By common sense, should you trust someone who has a conflict of interest that receives huge compensation by “reviewing” The RealReal? Probably not. They are not reviewing, but selling!
Therefore, I recommend reading the reviews of those written by the non-affiliates of The RealReal.
7. The RealReal Spent a Lot of Budgets on Advertising
The RealReal spends a lot of money on advertisements. There is nothing wrong with marketing their products via paid advertisements.
But the problem is how can they make a profit with huge marketing costs? It’s common sense that The RealReal passes the costs to customers. So that explains why The RealReal is more expensive than other similar products you can find on Amazon. The higher price doesn’t mean their quality is better. They are just trying to cover their marketing costs.
As a smart customer, you should only pay for the quality of the product, but not the marketing costs of the product. That’s why I recommend purchasing from a large marketplace like Amazon, which I will tell you more about later.
Is The RealReal a scam?
I cannot say The RealReal is a scam for legal reasons. I researched them thoroughly, including their social media pages, review sites, forums, and so on. And while I see nothing suspicious about their business, I cannot find any verified positive reviews.
If The RealReal is a genuine and well-established company offering high-quality products, you should be able to find numerous positive customer reviews about them online.
But, strangely, I can’t find any. This could be due to the company’s service quality rather than its product quality. As a result, I have less faith in them. That’s why I looked for a similar or identical product on Amazon for you. Let me elaborate later.
The RealReal Customer Reviews
The reviews on therealreal.com helped us gain a feel for The RealReal by hearing directly from actual buyers (pun intended). Consumers have generally positive impressions of The RealReal, with a few exceptions related to the quality of their customer support.
The most important comments are as follows:
- A fantastic destination to find luxury things at a reduced price.
- Excellent selection
- Shipping is completed quickly.
- Products that are legal
- Customer service can be enhanced.
The RealReal Return Policy
Fortunately, you can return the item if you think you were sold a fake. Within 14 days of the date of shipment or in-store purchase, you must submit a return request. Unfortunately, they will deduct $11.95 from your refund to cover the cost of the return label.
Returns will not be accepted if the security tag has been removed from the item.
Totes, suitcases, cosmetics, swimwear, and any other items marked as final sale or discounted by 40% or more are non-returnable. If, however, you happen to receive a fake, I’m sure there are some caveats.
How to Contact The RealReal’s Customer Service?
The RealReal does not have great customer service. It may take more than 48 hours to get a response from them. Here are the contact details:

The RealReal Reviews: Final Verdict
The RealReal is a fantastic product that delivers on the promises made in their advertisements. However, I would not recommend purchasing from them. Instead, you can find a similar or identical product on Amazon.
Because The RealReal is a small company, I am hesitant to purchase from them. Personally, I always try to find an alternative on Amazon. Every time, I can find a similar or better one at a lower price on Amazon. In the following section, I’ll tell you where you can get it on Amazon.
Where to Get the Best Alternative of The RealReal?
If you’d like to get the best alternative for The RealReal, you might go to Amazon.
I just found a very similar product on Amazon that can produce the same or even better results. It is also more reasonably priced!
That’s why I bought one from Amazon, and I don’t regret it because of the excellent customer service and quick delivery.
You should look into it so that you won’t regret it later.
