Sugar Cookies Recipe: How to Make It

Ingredients (Makes 40-50 cookies)

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 
  • 1 1/4 cup sugar 
  • 1 egg 
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract 
  • 3 cups flour 
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 
  • 1/4 tsp salt 
  • Colored sugar, sprinkles, or icing-for decorating 


  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. 
  2. Add in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined. 
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. 
  4. Slowly add the flour mixture to the butter/sugar mixture and mix well. 
  5. Roll the dough with a rolling pin between 2 sheets of parchment or wax paper and place on a baking sheet. 
  6. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. 
  7. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. 
  8. Cut the dough into shapes using cookie cutter and transfer to a baking sheet. 
  9. Sprinkle with colored sugars (if using) and bake for 8-12 minutes. 
  10. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to a rack to cool completely. 
  11. Store in an airtight container.
