Saving for your retirement years is challenging enough but is made even more challenging when you have several chronic medical conditions and lots of expensive prescription medications since you didn’t take care of your health during your working years.

Money is at the forefront of our minds these days, especially with the state of the nation’s economy and our personal economy. Our society has been programmed to believe if you want to change something, you need to buy something.

Congratulations, you just bought an overpriced closet rod and junk collector! When you buy expensive “stuff” to reach your goal, you are essentially hiring and employing the “stuff” to do all of the work for you instead of empowering yourself to do it. 

How many of us have said “that was expensive enough, I’d better use it” or “if I buy this nice set of weights and videos, it’ll force me to work out.” The problem is we never use it. But “weight,” there’s more! Get it? Yep, that just happened.

When first starting out an activity program, the goal is to start simply and with the lowest cost possible. As far as I’m aware, I’ve never seen definitive research to prove that a person has better compliance over the long term after spending a large sum of money on a workout program or equipment than they do if they spend little to nothing.

Similar to a brand new car and truck, workout equipment such as treadmills, elliptical machines and weight machines lose much of their value the moment you purchase them. Simply look at ads on online classifieds and many times you’ll see “Essentially brand new treadmill, used about 10 times, bought new last year for $1200, yours for $500, my loss your gain.” If you’ve ever looked at classifieds you’ve seen an ad exactly like this one.

So, if you can get a used but essentially brand new treadmill for over 50% off, why would you ever buy brand new equipment?

Working out at home is a huge time-saver. No longer do you have to factor in driving time, costs of transportation, no transportation, and weather. Plus you save money by not paying for a gym membership. If you feel like you must have a gym membership, then that is perfectly fine. But, most people don’t need to have access to a gym to get a great workout completed.

In order to get to the gym for me, it would take me about 20 minutes to drive EACH way. That means I have used 40 minutes of my day to work out and I haven’t even been active or exercised yet during that time. 

If I factor in an hour workout then that’s an hour and forty minutes I actually spent working out! As you can see, by working out at home, you save yourself an incredible amount of time over months and years and will have an extra forty minutes in your day to do something else that needs to be completed like spend time with your kids, spouse, or have an extra cup of coffee. 

Also, in many areas of the country, winter is an imposing fact of life. When there is snow and ice on the ground, my travel time to the gym is longer and frankly, sometimes I don’t want to leave a warm home to trek to the gym!

Being active at home is also a private way to work out. By working out at home you don’t have to worry about other people in the gym as this can be intimidating and uncomfortable. You can stream workouts and online programs in the privacy of your own home and get the workout you need. 

This saves you from needing to spend a small fortune on dedicated workout clothes and shoes as well. Yeah, that old, torn t-shirt will work just fine if it’s only you in your home. This helps

by giving you control of your environment so uncontrollable factors don’t prevent you from getting your workout completed. Let’s be honest, if the creeper or the grunter is at the gym at the same time as you, you’re not going to get much of a workout completed.

Avoid Costly Memberships

Another cost barrier to starting a new activity plan is the cost of a membership to a gym, club, or fitness facility. One of the most frustrating experiences of my life was spent speaking with a “membership coordinator” at a trendy fitness club. 

They started out our conversation with these teaser rates and low monthly rates which all sounded great but when it came time to sign on the dotted line, the one-time “Initiation Fee” and “Administrative Fee” had added on about $300 to the cost to join.
