Researchers conducted a 12-week randomized study with women where one group took about 2,200 milligrams of flaxseed oil versus safflower seed oil capsules daily. The flaxseed oil group reported significant reductions in skin sensitivity, skin water loss, roughness, and scaling and increased skin smoothness and hydration. This was a small study, but the results were impressive enough and flaxseed oil is safe enough that I recommend trying it, especially in the wintertime for people who struggle with dry, scaly skin. After I analyzed this study, even I began to take flaxseed oil for my skin.
Another reason I’m willing to believe the results of this study is because some recent studies have shown that taking omega-3 supplements (one fish oil pill plus 1,000 milligrams of flaxseed oil) for 3 months or less may also reduce the risk and symptoms of dry eyes. Not bad for such a low-cost product. (Nutrients that are healthy for the eye are healthy for the skin because the tissues are similar.) I recommend using a teaspoon or two (up to a tablespoon) of flaxseed oil itself versus pills. Otherwise, the sheer number of pills you’d have to take to equal this amount of omega-3s from plants would be huge.
Lutein and zeaxanthin
These two compounds (10 milligrams of lutein and 0.6 milligram of zeaxanthin) can improve skin health based on a preliminary clinical trial. Again, this is not a surprise because they also protect eye health.
Green tea supplements and French maritime pine bark (Pycnogenol) have initial data for skin health, but more research is needed. Vitamin C from foods has been associated with a lower rate of skin aging, but whether the supplement can do the same thing (by potentially improving collagen production) is unknown. Vitamin C is an ingredient in a lot of effective topical medicines, though.
