Drinking alcohol in excess is a major epidemic, contributing to tens of thousands of deaths each year. Besides the toll on your life, excess alcohol can increase your weight/waist size, blood pressure, allergy symptoms, bone loss, and risk of numerous cancers, plus it’s toxic to all your organs, from the liver to the heart. Then, of course, there’s the issue of addiction. Alcohol has become the self-medication drug of choice for my generation, next to pain pills. If you think you need help, please seek it.
What is Alcohol Dependence?
Alcohol dependence is a chronic medical condition that typically includes a current or past history of excessive drinking, a strong craving for alcohol, continued use despite repeated problems with drinking, and an inability to control alcohol consumption.
Home Remedies For Alcohol Dependence
Puerarin, the active ingredient in kudzu, is mostly made up of isoflavones, and it may have the ability to discourage heavy drinking. It is supposed to help you drink less by giving you that pleasant feeling without reaching for a drink. One of the best preliminary studies on this effect involved taking two 500-milligram capsules of kudzu extract in the morning, afternoon, and evening for a month. Each 500-milligram capsule of kudzu extract contained 125 milligrams of isoflavones, so participants were getting a total of 750 milligrams of isoflavones daily. (The product came from Natural Pharmacia International and is known as Alkontrol-Herbal, or NPI-031.) Taking the isoflavones could impact the brain’s reward center faster so you don’t have to consume as much alcohol.
Vitamin B1 (thiamin)
Excessive alcohol intake can potentially lead to a deficiency of this vitamin, which could lead to temporary or permanent brain damage (Wernicke’s encephalopathy and Korsakoff’s psychosis).
This supplement can potentially reduce cravings and the “time to first drink” (at 1,000 milligrams per day), but the results are weak overall.
