Looking to level up your mobile gaming? The Backbone One mobile controller might just be what you need! If you’ve got the cash to spare and you’re all about those mobile games, then you’ll definitely love this handy accessory.

We’ve had the chance to try it out on our iPhone 12 Pro and let’s just say, it’s made our mobile gaming experience a whole lot better. We’ve taken it everywhere, from home to the office, and it’s held up great.

So, you might have seen some ads for the Backbone One floating around and wondering if it’s worth the investment. Well, we’ve got you covered. Read on for our full thoughts on this mobile controller.

What Is The Backbone Mobile Controller?

This bad boy slides right onto your phone, making your games feel more like you’re playing on a console. With a design similar to the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck, you’ll enjoy a more immersive gaming experience without breaking the bank.

The Backbone One is compatible with a variety of native mobile games on Apple Arcade and the Google Play Store (Android version), as well as popular streaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Remote Play, Amazon Luna, NVIDIA GeForce Now, and even Google Stadia.

The controller has a D-pad and one analogue stick on the left, and the right side features the other analogue stick and face buttons. Choose from the version with Xbox buttons or the version with PlayStation buttons.

The backbone, as the name suggests, holds the two sides of the controller together and is a sturdy structure that can stretch to fit different phone sizes. Whether you’re an Android or iPhone user, there’s a version of the Backbone One for you.

Backbone Mobile Controller Design

The Backbone One controller might just be what you need. This thing is seriously slick, with buttons that have a satisfying click and triggers that have just the right amount of give.

Plus, it slots right onto your phone, turning it into a mini gaming console in seconds. The rounded corners even complement your phone’s screen, making it a gaming accessory you’ll be proud to show off in public.

Backbone Mobile Controller Features

Backbone One mobile controller clips onto your phone, connects via the charging port, and gives you a console-grade gaming experience on the go. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

Our unit came with a one-month Xbox Game Pass subscription, so you can try out a bunch of big-name games right off the bat. Plus, the controller has a 3mm headphone jack so you can use any standard headphones, and a port for your iPhone charger so you can keep your phone charged up while you play.

And the cherry on top? There’s a free Backbone app (accessed by an orange button on the controller) that helps you find available games on your device. So whether you’re on the go or just need some gaming inspiration, the Backbone One has got you covered.

Backbone Mobile Controller Setup

The Backbone One is supposed to be a breeze to set up – just plug it into your phone and you’re good to go. You’ll just need to grab the Backbone app, but that’s it. No fuss, no muss.

Now, we did run into one hiccup during our setup, but it had nothing to do with the controller itself. Our trusty phone was starting to show its age and its charging port was being a little finicky – it would only charge if we held the iPhone charger in a weird angle. But hey, we’re in the age of wireless charging, so it wasn’t the end of the world.

But here’s the thing: we thought our phone was done for and needed a pricey repair. However, it turns out all the problem was was a little bit of pocket lint clogging up the charging port. A quick clean and we were good to go. And now, every time we want to play, we’re up and running in seconds. So no need to panic if you run into similar issues, just check your charging port!

Backbone Mobile Controller Performance

We finally got our Backbone controller and controller working and it was time to have some fun! We started by playing around with the Backbone at home with our PS5 and iPhone 12 Pro. We used the PS5 Remote Play App and were pleasantly surprised by how well the controller worked as an extension of our PS5, even though it had Xbox button prompts.

We then took the controller to our office and tried it with Google Stadia and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The games were passable, with nice graphics on the iPhone screen, but we did notice some choppiness in Cyberpunk 2077 when the internet wasn’t as strong.

We also tested the controller in the park using Xbox Cloud Gaming and Fortnite. The controller performed well, but we did experience some frustrating moments due to signal drops.

Finally, we checked out some native mobile games on Apple Arcade and the controller worked seamlessly with all of them except for NBA 2K23, which required an internet connection.

Overall, the controller felt great to play with and the only downside was that it got a bit slippery with sweaty palms after extended use. If you’re looking for a controller for phone-friendly games, this is definitely a strong option.
