5-Hour Energy Review – Scam or Legit? Exposed!

Should you buy 5-Hour Energy? Is it worth your money or a scam?

If you are reading this 5-Hour Energy review, chances are you have watched the ads for 5-Hour Energy and wonder if it really delivers what it claims.

Over the past few weeks, I have done thorough research about the 5-Hour Energy to help you make an informed decision. I can tell you everything you need to know before you buy.

At the end of this review, I will also tell you the best alternative of 5-Hour Energy so that you can enjoy the same benefit at a lower cost.

In this 5-Hour Energy review, I’ll cover the following topics to assist you in making an informed decision:

What is 5-Hour Energy?

Many people in the United States drink energy drinks, and 5-Hour Energy is a top brand. It’s packaged in a tiny bottle that weighs less than two ounces, making it an easy choice for a quick afternoon pick-me-up.

But how reliable is the product? What do you think the risks are? In this post, we will examine the 5 Hour Energy Formula in detail to address your concerns and explain why we do or do not recommend it as an energy supplement.

Regular Strength Energy Shot Ingredient Review

5-hour Regular Strength Energy Shot is 5-Hour Energy’s best-selling product. The active ingredients are the same in all varieties, so your rating applies to all of these products.

Caffeine, at a dose of 200 milligrams (mg), is the main active ingredient. Most manufacturers use a caffeine content of about 200 milligrams per serving, although the appropriate dose to increase mental focus and physical performance is between 100 and 400 milligrams, as we described in our post on the best pre-workout products.

This is an effective dose that is also low enough that most users will not feel anxious. The caffeine content is about the same as two regular cups of coffee.

The vitamin B12 in a 5-hour energy shot provides more than 20,000% of the recommended daily dose (DV). Since this vitamin is water soluble, the risk of overdose is very low.

Nevertheless, we do not believe it is wise to take megadoses of a vitamin without first establishing a clear deficit.

If you look at the list of ingredients in 5-hour Energy, you’ll notice that taurine is listed first. This means that it makes up the largest part of the formula, making it the element with the highest concentration.

Taurine is a common ingredient in energy drinks, but we have yet to find any scientific evidence that it actually increases energy levels on its own. Some studies have also shown that this chemical can be detrimental to the cognitive development of adolescents.

The human body naturally produces the molecule glucuronolactone, the second named element in the prop mix.

Although there does not seem to be much medical evidence of its effectiveness, taking glucuronolactone as a dietary supplement is thought to increase energy. Clinical studies have shown that the performance of tired drivers improved after consuming an energy drink containing glucuronolactone, taurine and caffeine (5-hour energy).

However, it is important to note that a second clinical investigation has shown that these three substances together have negative effects on blood pressure and insulin sensitivity.

We could not find any studies supporting the use of N-acetyl-L-tyrosine or malic acid to increase energy levels.

In a medical study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2021, citicoline was found to have nootropic effects, suggesting it could be a useful addition to an energy drink.

According to the authors of the study, supplemental intake of citicoline over a 12-week period improved memory performance in older people with memory impairment.

In contrast to the total prop-mix dose of 1,870 mg in 5-hour energy used in the study, the dose used was 500 mg daily. We doubt that there is a 500 mg dose of citicoline in 5-hour Energy, as this is the last ingredient mentioned.

To conclude this look at active ingredients, let us talk about L-phenylalanine, an amino acid that serves as a building block for many different neurotransmitters (NIH). Both the medical literature and the NIH page on this amino acid do not mention any energy-boosting or fatigue-reducing properties.

Overall, this formula contains some useful substances; we expect it to temporarily boost energy levels. This is not a guarantee that the product is healthy, but rather that it fulfills its great health promise.

5-Hour Energy’s Questionable Inactive Ingredients

5-hour Energy contains inactive ingredients natural and artificial flavors. Since these are not strictly regulated and the chemicals used to make the flavors are not listed in this description, we advise you to avoid these substances altogether.

Certain synthetic flavorings have been shown to be harmful in animal studies.

In clinical studies on young, healthy adults, the artificial sweetener sucralose was found to cause insulin dysregulation. We find this study troubling because we believe sucralose has even more negative effects in unhealthy adults (i.e., most Americans).

Potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate and EDTA are the three preservatives contained in this product. Researchers found potassium sorbate to be “clearly genotoxic” to human cells in an in vitro (test tube) study. Given the availability of natural, preservative-free energy sources such as coffee, we advise extreme caution and avoidance of these additives.

Deaths Attributed to 5-hour Energy

According to a 2012 New York Times article, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigated 13 deaths related to the use of 5-hour energy. To date, we have not discovered any results of such investigations.

There is no evidence that 5-hour Energy drinks caused the deaths, but it should be a warning to anyone considering purchasing these drinks. Consumers with pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure are especially vulnerable to this scam.

Some people should avoid caffeine because it can raise blood pressure, but the combination of stimulants in 5-hour energy shots can be riskier than consuming the same amount of caffeine in coffee.

Extra Strength Energy Shot Ingredient Review

5-hour Energy advertises an Extra Strength Energy Shot that is supposedly even stronger.

The caffeine is 30 mg higher in Extra Strength than in Regular Strength, and the energy blend (aside from the caffeine) is 100 mg higher. From our perspective, these are virtually minimal changes, and this product distinction is mainly for marketing purposes and does not have a significantly different impact on energy.

Yes, more caffeine contributes to more energy, but a difference of 30 mg is small. We still would not recommend this product, as none of the inactive chemicals have been changed.

Benefits of 5-Hour Energy

1. Product Quality is acceptable

5-Hour Energy’s product quality is satisfactory. It’s well-designed and serves its purpose well. Some customers may, however, receive defective products from them. As a result, I would recommend that 5-Hour Energy inspect the products before shipping them to customers. Customers are less likely to receive subpar or defective products as a result of this.

2. Customer Service is Available

Shopping in stores that provide poor customer service is extremely inconvenient. As a result, it’s critical to shop at stores that at the very least provide a phone number and an email address for after-sales service.

5-Hour Energy’s customer service is adequate but not exceptional. You may contact them if you have any questions or concerns about your order, but it may take more than 48 hours to receive a response. This is not ideal, especially in some emergency situations.

3. 5-Hour Energy meets the product description

Many stores use exaggerated marketing tactics in their advertisements to increase sales. This does not always imply that the product is a scam.

5-Hour Energy’s advertisements are quite impressive and can catch the attention of customers. Some may believe they are overhyped. However, you cannot conclude that it is a scam because 5-Hour Energy does, to some extent, deliver on its promises.

4. Door-to-door Delivery

Many people prefer to shop online because it saves them time. Simply place an order and wait for the product to arrive. You are not required to drive to a physical store to obtain the product.

5-Hour Energy is an online retailer that offers door-to-door delivery. Even if you live in a remote location, you can still purchase from 5-Hour Energy.

5. Easy to Place an Order

5-Hour Energy’s website design is appealing. It is very simple for people to place an order. Simply click the “add to cart” button and proceed to the payment page with your credit card. Unlike a physical store, 5-Hour Energy’s website accepts orders 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

5-Hour Energy Cons and Complaints

1. 5-Hour Energy is Overpriced

5-Hour Energy is not inexpensive. Many people complain that it is too expensive. Because the quality of 5-Hour Energy is not superior to that of other similar products, the higher price is not justified.

You will be able to find a similar or identical product at a lower cost elsewhere. Let me tell you where at the end of this 5-Hour Energy review.

2. Inefficient logistics

5-Hour Energy is a small company with insufficient capital to invest in logistics. They are forced to rely on inefficient third-party logistics. They have minimal control over the shipping speed.

Therefore, you may see a lot of customer complaints about their slow delivery. If you want fast shipping, go with a large marketplace like Amazon. Unlike 5-Hour Energy, Amazon can ship products in a matter of days.

3. 5-Hour Energy Has Few Positive Reviews

I looked for positive 5-Hour Energy reviews but came up empty-handed. While the product is excellent, customers may be dissatisfied with their service.

Because 5-Hour Energy is a small company, you should not expect them to provide world-class service. It is preferable to purchase from a large marketplace such as Amazon if you want to ensure good after-sales service. There is much better customer protection there.

4. 5-Hour Energy does not offer unconditional refunds

5-Hour Energy does not always issue refunds to customers. Although there is a refund policy, 5-Hour Energy has complete discretion over whether or not to issue refunds.

Some customers may find it unjust. However, this is a disadvantage when purchasing from an independent online store. Personally, I prefer purchasing from marketplaces such as Amazon, where the refund policy is reasonable. When requesting a refund, you will have Amazon’s backup.

5. Difficult to Return the Product

If you don’t like 5-Hour Energy, it’s difficult to return it to them. You would be responsible for the shipping costs.

That is why I dislike shopping at independent stores. If you want to avoid this problem, I recommend purchasing from Amazon. If you don’t like the product, you can easily return it. Later, I’ll tell you where you can get a similar or identical product to 5-Hour Energy on Amazon.

6. Some Good Reviews are Written by 5-Hour Energy’s Affiliates

You probably have found some other reviews of 5-Hour Energy and all of them are saying good words.

But some of them are actually paid to write, meaning they are sponsored posts. Therefore, their words are often biased and not trustworthy. Those reviews are simply sales pages and do not tell you the downsides of 5-Hour Energy.

By common sense, should you trust someone who has a conflict of interest that receives huge compensation by “reviewing” 5-Hour Energy? Probably not. They are not reviewing, but selling!

Therefore, I recommend reading the reviews of those written by the non-affiliates of 5-Hour Energy.

7. 5-Hour Energy Spent a Lot of Budgets on Advertising

5-Hour Energy spends a lot of money on advertisements. There is nothing wrong with marketing their products via paid advertisements.

But the problem is how can they make a profit with huge marketing costs? It’s common sense that 5-Hour Energy passes the costs to customers. So that explains why 5-Hour Energy is more expensive than other similar products you can find on Amazon. The higher price doesn’t mean their quality is better. They are just trying to cover their marketing costs.

As a smart customer, you should only pay for the quality of the product, but not the marketing costs of the product. That’s why I recommend purchasing from a large marketplace like Amazon, which I will tell you more about later.

5 Hour Energy Shot Pricing

When purchased in bulk (10 packs), 5 Hour Energy typically costs between $20 and $28.

Comparatively, the cost of a 5-hour energy shot is higher than that of a standard energy drink.

A smaller package doesn’t make up for the fact that it contains the same amount of caffeine.

Neither the price nor the amount of caffeine in 5 Hour Energy make it a good choice as an energy drink.

However, it works much better as a panic button in situations where you need to perform at peak levels of concentration and efficiency immediately.

How Much Caffeine Is In a 5 Hour Energy Shot?

The caffeine content of 5 Hour Energy is 200 mg per serving (1.93 fl. oz.).

Despite the name, competing energy drink brands like Reign and Bang contain up to 300 mg of caffeine, making 5 Hour Energy shots a bit of a misnomer.

However, as mentioned earlier, 5 Hour Energy Shots contain significantly less water than the average energy drink.

5 Hour Energy contains about 103 mg of caffeine per fluid ounce, while drinks like Reign and Bang contain only 18.75 mg per fluid ounce.

The quick onset of effect could be due to the fact that it contains a high concentration of caffeine in a very low dose.

There is a significant difference between consuming 300 mg of caffeine over 30 minutes and consuming 200 mg in just a few seconds, even if you are used to caffeinated drinks and have a fairly good caffeine metabolism.

If you have never had an energy drink before, think twice about trying a 5 Hour Energy.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends consuming no more than 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per day, as too much can have negative consequences.

  • Insomnia
  • Anxiousness
  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Digestive Issues
  • Nausea
  • Headaches

You can avoid the side effects of too much caffeine by consuming 5 Hour Energy Shots sparingly and not regularly.

Do 5 Hour Energy Shots Have Sugar?

5 Hour Energy Shots are sugar-free, using artificial sweeteners like sucralose and acesulfame potassium instead of sugar.

Many energy drinks contain a lot of sugar. So the fact that 5 Hour Energy Shots contain no sugar is a big plus.

Also, since none of the ingredients in a 5 Hour Energy Shot raise blood sugar levels, you do not have to worry about a sugar-induced crash after consumption.

However, the ingredients in the drink itself can cause an energy crash, which is a topic for a later time.

Although 5 Hour Energy Shots contain no added sugar, they are sweetened with artificial sweeteners like sucralose and acesulfame potassium, both of which have 0 calories.

It seems odd to me that candy would be included in such a small amount of an energy drink, but it could mask the bitterness of the caffeine.

Both chemicals have been approved by the FDA and are zero-calorie sweeteners with no known nutritional effects.

There are no known negative effects associated with taking 5 Hour Energy Shots in the recommended amount.

Is 5-Hour Energy a Scam?

I cannot say 5-Hour Energy is a scam for legal reasons. I researched them thoroughly, including their social media pages, review sites, forums, and so on. And while I see nothing suspicious about their business, I cannot find any verified positive reviews.

If 5-Hour Energy is a genuine and well-established company offering high-quality products, you should be able to find numerous positive customer reviews about them online.

But, strangely, I can’t find any. This could be due to the company’s service quality rather than its product quality. As a result, I have less faith in them. That’s why I looked for a similar or identical product on Amazon for you. Let me elaborate later.

Positive and Negative Feedback by Real Customers of 5-Hour Energy

Positive Feedbacks

  • Compared to dietary supplements, it is quite inexpensive.
  • Several useful energy compounds

Negative Feedbacks

  • Flavors that are artificial
  • Preservatives
  • Unnecessary vitamin B12 overdose
  • In our opinion, this is an unhealthy formulation.

5-Hour Energy Customer Reviews

Reviews of 5-hour Energy on Amazon are mostly positive. FakeSpot gives the company a B grade, and customers give their Regular Energy shots an average of 5 stars. This is a system that can potentially detect fake reviews.

With a B-, 5-hour Energy has not faked the reviews for its best-selling product, meaning the system has not been cheated.

A customer claims he is not a coffee drinker, but 5-Hour Energy works for him and is cheaper than supplements, which earned him the most popular positive review:

“Far less expensive and more handy than purchasing many jars of capsules. On midway days, I drink half a bottle first thing in the morning. A complete day of rougher days. It’s still part of my maintenance routine when exhaustion (and brain fog) knock me out.”

The most shared one-star rating complains about the terrible taste of the energy shots and is attributed to a “DanAMA MCLE”

“I’m not sure why this buy tasted so much worse than the previous one. I couldn’t wait to finish it all, but it seemed to take an eternity. I gave it a 2 out of 5 since the product performed as expected.”

Real people try 5-Hour Energy in the most popular video on YouTube about the supplement, which has over 500,000 views. Their reactions are both sincere and funny.

5-Hour Energy Reviews: Final Verdict

5-Hour Energy is a fantastic product that delivers on the promises made in their advertisements. However, I would not recommend purchasing from them. Instead, you can find a similar or identical product on Amazon.
